The Houston Astros are considering a surprising move to accommodate a potential return of free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman: shifting second baseman Jose Altuve to left field.
This unconventional idea, reminiscent of Craig Biggio’s outfield stint to make room for Jeff Kent, has Altuve’s support. “We haven’t talked about it, but for Alex I’d do whatever,” Altuve said. “He’s one of the best players on this team. We want him to stay, and whatever I have to do for him to stay I’m willing to do it.”
General Manager Dana Brown confirmed the team’s interest in re-signing Bregman, despite the infield already featuring Christian Walker at first, Altuve at second, Jeremy Peña at shortstop, and Isaac Paredes at third. Paredes could potentially shift to second base if Altuve moves to the outfield.
“Ultimately, if you get Bregman back, he would play third base,” Brown stated. “Then you would kind of work through ‘OK, what should we do to adjust and make that happen?’ It’s a long shot, but it’s conversations you have.”
Manager Joe Espada praised Altuve’s team-first mentality. “I respect his willingness to do whatever it takes,” Espada said, adding that they’ve discussed potential lineups with Bregman’s return in mind.
While Altuve has never played the outfield, the Astros believe his athleticism would allow him to handle left field, particularly at Daikin Park. This move would also address the team’s desire to reduce Yordan Alvarez’s time in left field.
