No. 1 Seed for South Carolina Women in SEC Tournament

In a dramatic turn of events, the South Carolina Gamecocks secured the No. 1 seed in the 2025 SEC Tournament by winning a coin flip against the Texas Longhorns. Both teams finished the regular season with identical 15-1 conference records, leading to the unusual tiebreaker.

The decisive coin toss took place during halftime of the Ole Miss and LSU game, with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey officiating. The Gamecocks logo appeared, granting them the top seed and sending them to Greenville with a first-round bye.  

Head coach Dawn Staley expressed her excitement and relief after the coin flip, acknowledging the unusual nature of the tiebreaker. Staley had previously questioned the use of a coin flip for such a crucial decision, comparing it to a hypothetical scenario in football.

Despite the unconventional path to the top seed, South Carolina boasts an impressive resume. The Gamecocks concluded their regular season with a victory over No. 14 Kentucky, accumulating 11 wins against ranked opponents and 10 wins against top-20 NET ranked teams.

This co-championship with Texas marks South Carolina’s fourth consecutive regular-season conference title and their fifth in the past six years. The Gamecocks will begin their SEC Tournament journey on Friday, March 7th, facing the winner of a series of games between Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt.
